Have you played in band before, maybe on another instrument? Starting on French Horn isn`t impossible, but most likely not recommended (especially in High School). If you do decide to start playing French Horn please feel free to email me with any questions. Or if you have AIM message me "JoeyHanks13", I`m on all the time either way.

Hi! I`ve been playing the horn for about 3 months now, and I love it!! The sound it makes is so nice! Anyways, I have a question for everyone: I just bought my own horn off eBay: it`s a Maxtone horn, with "by French Engineer" engraved on it. I got it for $240 US. I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about this brand, because I can`t seem to find anything pertaining to it on the Net? I tried as best as I could when I was bidding on the horn to look for information on it, but hey, it was only 240 dollars, so I wasn`t too worried about it! It sounds OK (although I think something might be loose, I`m not sure). OH and one more thing... this is a question for the more experienced players: when you have a brand new horn, does it take a while more the sound to become mellow? Mine is kind of metal-like (not "ting"-y, but just a little more trumpet-like than a horn should be).
So, if anyone can answer either of these questions for me, I would GREATLY appreciate it! Please e-mail your replies to me at jesus_freak_here@hotmail.com
THANK YOU!!!

Do you mean 2/4? In that case it`s two quarter notes in a measure where each one gets the beat. If you mean 2/2 each half note gets the beat. So if you see a half note you only play it one beat. Like a quarter note. If you need more help then feel free to email me.
I hope I answer your question in the email I sent you about the Maxtone horn.

The horns on Ebay are offbrand horns. This is that they come from smaller less known companies (Ex: Maxtone). That is why they sell for so much less. Not to mention on ebay it comes from individuals and it`s always a gamble. It`s a better idea in my opinion just to be patient, wait, and save your money. Conn, King, Atkinson (I just recently purchased one of these), Farkas, Olds, and Yamaha are just a few of the brand names horns that are available. If you`re really interested in getting a good instrument at a great price visit the woodwind/brasswind site. I`ve had my Atkinson A-600 for two weeks and I love it! It`s great and I got for an awesome price.

I have been playing french horn for 10+ years. I am finishing my undergraduate degree at USC and gig around LA. If you are interested in buying a good instrument i would suggest finding a vintage Conn 8D. A letter series conn usually has a really great sound. If you want ease of playing I would suggest a New Hans Hoyer 7801. Thesen horns just about play themselves but I think they lack a bit of the character that the older instruments have. You can check out www.hornguys.com or www.hornplayer.net to find a good instrument. E-bay is ok but it is dangerous. You really have to know what you are doing in order to get the best deal. Best of luck to you all.

I`m 19 and have been playing French Horn for 3 years.
For beginners I would suggest a Hans Hoyer intermediate level. It has excellent response and a medium bore size so it`s easy to learn with.
I just bought a Hans Hoyer professional which is kind of like a German version of the Conn 8D and I`m loving it.

The Woodwind Brasswind company is a really good company. You can look at their site at www.wwbw.com They sell all kinds of horns for greater prices then you`ll find at local stores.

I`m a freshman and I`ve been playing horn for 4 years. I`ve been using a school horn, and I`m looking for one of my own, but my budget is about $1000 US, at the most. I`ve checked out several sites, but the horns I`ve found are all fairly expensive, so I`ve been looking into used horns, without success. Does anyone know where to find cheap horns, used or new, but in good condition?
I haven`t found Carol of the Bells, but I`ll keep looking.
