I'm doing a small research project on classical music and would love to hear about your experiences:
What’s your first memory of going to a concert?
What's your favorite memory of a concert experience?
How do you keep informed about new concert dates?
How much do you know about the story and performers before the concert?
What's the actual concert experience like - before, during and after?
Who do you normally go with?
Do you ever visit a website before or after the event and if so why?
Do you belong to any online groups or communities for concert goers?
What do you think would make it easier for other people to get involved in concerts / what are the really big barriers?
What do you think will get kids could get into classical music?

Looking forward to hearing from you all!
Hx

What’s your first memory of going to a concert?
A- Elementary school has a program to take students to the Symphony Orchestra each year.
3rd Grade.
What's your favorite memory of a concert experience?
A- Favorite? Seeing the Magic Flute in 4th grade. School sponsered event.Very funny.
How do you keep informed about new concert dates?
A- I do check website of some orchestra, but mostly am on the mailing list of some and of course am in the orchestra of many concerts.
How much do you know about the story and performers before the concert?
A- A lot. I certainly research the pieces I am playing. I do try and learn about concerts I go to listen to.
What's the actual concert experience like - before, during and after?
A- Playing is wonderful. Because I play so much I find myself very critical of other performances. If it is a good performance I really enjoy it. I feel happy and pleased.
Who do you normally go with?
A-My wife or by myself.
Do you ever visit a website before or after the event and if so why?
A-Yes - before to see descriptions of the art and learn the synopsis. I might visit the website after only if I didn't make time to visit it before.
Do you belong to any online groups or communities for concert goers?
A- Yes. I am a member of the San Francisco Opera Guild.
What do you think would make it easier for other people to get involved in concerts / what are the really big barriers?
A- Big barriers? Cost of tickets. Wondering if the actual director or contracted conductor is actually going to conduct the group. Things that would make it easier are discounted 1/2 price tickets for each one purchased. A coalition of reataurants that may give a discount for concert goers and prioritized seating and service to be sure they give excellent service and the meal is complete do concert goers can maek it to the concert on time.

What do you think will get kids could get into classical music?
A- programs that get them to see the funny and less seriousness of classical. To get them to see it is enjoyable. Matching the orchestra music with a jazz combo or a latin group and integrating the music. It allows the youngsters to clap after solos and they dont' have to be as still for as long. Kids have short attention spans (well most adults do also). Singers with straight voice as opposed to traditional operatic voices where it is difficult to understand the words.

What’s your first memory of going to a concert?
A-My first memory is going to see the LA Phillarmonic play with a friend back in seventh grade (ahhh the good old days). It was a special Christmas show, and the tickets were sold for $5.00

What's your favorite memory of a concert experience?
A-I would have to say that my favorite memory was the memory described above.

How do you keep informed about new concert dates?
A- I read newpapers and listen to conversations of other members in the SYmphony group I play in.

How much do you know about the story and performers before the concert?
A-Not much. It's fun to find that stuff out after watching the show, so I don't judge the group by it's history and members.

What's the actual concert experience like - before, during and after?
A- It's invigorating...Almost feels like I was a five year old again at a birthday party.

Who do you normally go with?
A-I like to go with my musician friends, because afterwards we can discuss musical theory and the musical teqniques used by the players

Do you ever visit a website before or after the event and if so why?
A- I normally visit online forums like this and see what othe rpeople thought of the group if they had heard them before. However, I don't go to the actual concert website.

Do you belong to any online groups or communities for concert goers?
A-Not specifically, I havn't been able to find a good website for that purpose, although I would most certainly join if I ever find one.

What do you think would make it easier for other people to get involved in concerts / what are the really big barriers?
A- I believe cost is the big barrier, if more groups put on shows like the Phillarmonic did at Christmas time, more epeople would see that Classical Music dose not have to be expensive. It can be cheaper than a dinner at McDonalds!

What do you think will get kids could get into classical music?
A- Many kids never get exposed to Classical Music. I believe that if more kids were exposed and were introduced to Classical Music using exiting pieces such as The Planets by Holst, a vast amount of kids would become interested. We just don't give kids oppurtunities to learn about Classical Music. That is the very reason why I support elementary band programs with as much passion as I do.

What’s your first memory of going to a concert?
Gee. Umm. I'm honestly drawing a blank. Haha.

What's your favorite memory of a concert experience?
When I was in Munich, I went to see a performance of Beethoven piano concertos, maybe? I have the ticket somewhere, haha. Anyways, I loved the concert hall so much, it was so pretty. Halfway (roughly) through the concert, the lights went out. They had to take a break and put candles up. The concert continued and as soon as the final note was played and the audience started clapping, the lights magically went back on.

How do you keep informed about new concert dates?
I read newspapers and check different web sites.

How much do you know about the story and performers before the concert?

I try to research a fair amount; it varies.

What's the actual concert experience like - before, during and after?
Who do you normally go with?

It all makes me want to go and practice more, at any stage. And I usually go with family or by myself.

Do you ever visit a website before or after the event and if so why?

Before usually to find information.

Do you belong to any online groups or communities for concert goers?

...Do you know of any?

What do you think would make it easier for other people to get involved in concerts / what are the really big barriers?

I think the issue is depending where you are transportation and costs.

What do you think will get kids could get into classical music?

Well, for me as a kid, what really got me into classical music was just hearing it on the radio. Also, Beethoven's Wig helped.
(www.beethovenswig.com) It's great and catchy :D
