Why don`t you check out www.classicmultimedia.co.uk they are offering just exactly what you are looking for: an essential library of classical music. I think you can only buy in the UK at present but you can check the reviews. They include the Du Pre/Barbirolli Elgar Cello Concerto
Good Luck

Here are some good cello recordings you can get:
Brahms/Chopin/Franck Cello Sonatas (du Pré/Barenboim)
Beethoven Cello Sonatas (du Pré/Barenboim OR the DVD with Rostropovich/Richter)
Mastercellist (Rostropovich)
Bach Cello Suites 1-6 (Rostropovich)
Shostakovich Cello Concertos (Rostropovich)
These oughta get you started. They are all great and inpiring - I have been playing the cello for six years and have been inspired by all of them (esp. the Bach Suites and the Beethoven DVD). Mastercellist, by the way, is a nice collection including the Dvorak and Schumann concertos, the Rachmaninov Sonata, and other great pieces for cello.
