Hehe, liked your modern music definition... soup can...

anyway, I`d like someone to explain what it is they like about baroque music. Is there a certain element to it that you like? Or did you just find that Baroque was right for you but you didn`t know/understand why? I ask because I, myself, enjoy the mid-classical period onward but I just can`t get involved with Baroque music. I consider it in no way inferior, I think Bach was a genius in creating damn near everything he composed. He had perfect control over what he did. At first I didn`t understand why I didn`t like it, but now I think I`ve figured it out. It seems (at least to me) to be completely uninvolving. When I say he has perfect control I mean it, it seems like there`s too much structure to it. It`s just tunes, no emotion. (Again, just on what I`ve heard, which is a moderate, but not extensive amount) I recognize that there are some merits to that but I just don`t enjoy it. When I listen to music I like to get invloved in it. It doesn`t have to be really emotional or romantic either, I just like to get caught up in the music a bit more. ...I think I conveyed that clearly...

hello,
I understand exactly what you mean about the lack of emotion. Thats why I can never listen to TOO much baroque or else I`ll go crazy from boredom.
Bach is not the best baroque composer in terms of emotion.
Try some of the french composers; Rameaux and Couperin especially. Purcell is great too ( Dido`s lament! ) Don`t forget Vivaldi either, some of his trumpet concertos can be exciting.
The reason baroque music is popular is because when you listen to it, its happy. Nothing can go wrong in most baroque music. Everything is calm, serene, and turns out okay. Nothing to get one too emotional or upset, but perfect for calming one down.
Though sometimes things can be emotional.

The first style of music I fell in love with was baroque...just the beauty of it is enough to make you tear up. Now, I know it sounds odd to tear up at a type of music, but I just love it and I was thrilled to find a topic on Baroque....
Has anyone played Bach`s Suite No.2? Im a flute player and wonder if there is any arrangements for other instruments.

I`m not a musician or anything, but I like to listen to baroque music whenever possible. G.F. Handel is probably my favorite with Vivaldi close second. The more ornamentation the musical performace has, the better I like it.

I love baroque music. I am a countertenor and I love to sing baroque operas. You may ask your questions about baroque and I will try to reply.
