This infrequently used term replaced the earlier marking adagio adagio that had been favoured by composers such as Martino Pesenti (c.1600 – c. 1648).
J.S. Bach uses the marking at the end of his Toccata in D Minor, though this is now often transcribed as molto adagio. Another example is the 3rd section of Bach's BWV 992 Capriccio
