maby he wants to be more "long", use armonical progresions.
mm, like 5-4 or 3-2, i love de 6-4 or 6-2, some like this:

G-C-D-A-D-(this chord: d, g#, b)-E(with g#)-A
and maby u cand "play" with yor melody, change the bass to mayor key and keep the melody.
