I became a senior (as in retired) student of music and the oboe in February 2014 when a retired high school music teacher started the Northumberland New Ventures Band in our town. I have always loved music and for many years I wanted to learn how to read and play music. I saw the recruiting poster and I jumped at the opportunity.
The New Ventures Band has been a huge success. As of November 2017 we have 95 members with five bands: a beginner group, an intermediate,a more advanced group, and a small big band that does daytime gigs at social clubs and retirement communities. In September 2017, one of our music directors created a special interest group, a Swing/Jazz band, which attracted 25 odd band members including me. Jazz oboe you ask? Big time! Ask Mr. Google.
In addition, I play with the NorthWinds woodwind ensemble (comprised of some fellow band members) and in a double reed group with some vastly more experienced (and tolerant) oboe, bassoon and English horn players. Plus I receive instruction from an amazing oboe teacher.
Why the oboe? At the inaugural band meeting, I thought maybe the clarinet, saxophone or oboe, in that order. By the time I got home that evening, the oboe had chosen me. I love its beautiful sound.
