About Me
Simone Gramaglia is considered one of the best Italian violist. He comes from a family of musicians and started his musical studies at the age of 5 studying music theory and piano. At the age of 7 he started playing the recorder, giving many concerts with this instrument in Italy, Germany and UK.

When he was 16 years old he fell in love with the viola inspired by the unique and warm sound of this great instrument. Six years later he got his Master` s Degree with honors after studying at the Music Conservatoire "N. Paganini" in Genoa, coached by professor Luigi Brusini.

In the following years Simone continued his study and perfected his solo technique at the Accademia Stauffer in Cremona with Bruno Giuranna, as well as studying for four years with Mikhail Kugel in Chioggia, Gent and Maastricht. He also attended masterclasses with Serge Collot in Koblenz and with Yuri Bashmet in Siena (Accademia Chigiana).

In 2000 whilst studying at the Accademia Stauffer, Simone formed the Quartetto di Cremona. From then on he devoted himself mainly to the Quartetto di Cremona, firstly studying with Piero Farulli in Fiesole then with Hatto Beyerle in Basel and Hannover and at the European Chamber Music Academy and also attending masterclasses at Proquartet in Paris with Paul Katz and Rainer Schmidt. The Quartetto di Cremona went on to launch their career achieving huge recognitions at international competitions including Cremona, Heerlen, Melbourne, and Gui amongst others.

During his career, Simone has collaborated with artists such as Antonio Meneses, Lynn Harrel, Lawrence Dutton (Emerson String Quartet), Angela Hewitt, Bella Davidovich, Cho Liang Lin, Lilya Zilberstein, Bruno Giuranna. He has performed at the most prestigious concert halls including the Lincoln Centre in New York, Konzerthaus in Berlin, Wigmore Hall in London, Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome, NCPA in Beijing, Salle Gaveau in Paris, Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires.

As a soloist Simone regularly performs with different orchestras, pianists and with the Italian guitarist Luigi Attademo. Both his chamber and solo repertoire include authors from the Classic and Romantic period (Mozart, Paganini, Schumann, Brahms), together with XX century composers (Britten, Hindemith, Bartok) with a special attention to rarely performed Italian authors (Giorgio Federico Ghedini) and contemporary ones like Silvia Colasanti and Fabio Vacchi.

In 2013 he performed the Paganini`s Sonata per la Grand Viola in Genoa with the Carlo Felice symphonic orchestra. In 2015 among other things Simone will perform in Rome (live broadcasted by the national radio - all Paganini for Viola and Guitar) and he will tour with the "Concert Music for Viola and Strings" by Federico Ghedini.

With the Quartetto di Cremona, Simone is "Artist in Residence" at the Società del Quartetto di Milano where he performed the complete Beethoven String Quartets. The cycle is being recorded by the record label AUDITE. In the next two seasons the quartet will perform the Beethoven cycle in UK and USA and is going to perform the Mozart string quartets cycle in Milan, Turin and Naples. As a soloist and with the quartet he has recorded for Decca, Brilliant and Genuni. His concerts have been worldwide broadcasted (ABC, BBC, RAI RADIO 3, WDR, DEUTSCHLAND RADIO, WQXR NEW YORK).

Very active as a teacher Simone taught viola at the Scuola Di Musica di Fiesole (2010-2012) and at the "N. Paganini" Conservatoire in Genova (2012). He is artistic director of "Master4Strings" a monthly viola, violin, cello and string quartet masterclass that takes place in Bogliasco. He regularly gives viola and chamber music masterclass in Europe (Manchester, London, Budapest, Valencia, Berlin, Isa Festival in Austria).

Since 2011, he is String Quartet Professor at the Walter Stauffer Academy in Cremona. Here some of his lessons have been recorded by RAI International and the German Magazine "Ensemble" wrote extensively about the string quartet class.
With the Quartetto di Cremona he also gives masterclasses in several European countries, as well as in Asia and the USA.

In Cremona he also developed a privileged position with the main musical and cultural institutions of the city, collaborating with Teatro Ponchielli, The Violin Museum and the Violin Makers Association with whom he organizes many activities for his students (concerts, masterclass, instruments trial, masterclasses with violin makers etc.).

Simone is a member of the European Chamber Music Academy founded by his friend Hatto Beyerle and a member of the European Chamber Music Teachers Association. He` s also a testimonial of the worldwide "Friends of Stradivari" project.

In May/June 2015 Simone has been a member of the jury at the "International String Quartet Competition Paolo Borciani" togheter with Marta Argherich, Heime Müller, Kikuei Ikeda, Fred Sherry and Geraldine Walther (Takacs String Quartet).

In January 2015 a cd with Paganini`s music for viola and guitar has been released for Brilliant Classics. The cd contains the Sonata per la Grand Viola and two works adapted for viola by Simone, Six Sonate op. 2 and the Sonata Concertata. "[..]These are wonderful intimate and deliciously melodic works, full of charm and Italian sunshine.
