Hey, My name is Katie Tyler. I'm 14 years old and i have been singing and playing piano since before I can remember... well maybe not that far back but at least 10 years. i've only gotten serious about it last year, when i started high school. i am doing group vocal lesson and i have private piano lessons. I started oboe last year after auditioning for my highschools bands, the HOD of music asked if i wanted to play, so they tried me out and i got it. i'm going to start private oboe lessons next term. i am teaching myself grade 4-5 AMEB pieces on oboe and i'm working towards doing my grade 4 AMEB piano by the end of the year.
I am trying to teach myself guitar but i'm not very confident about it coz my older sister is really good at it. when i earn enough money i am going to get private guitar lessons(from my sisters friend) and i want to learn electric guitar and bass guitar as well. i want to start a band with some of my friends and i want to be able to play all the instruments in a rock band(electric guitar, bass guitar, keyboard and drumkit) but bass guitar would be my main instrument for band(along with keyboard).
it says on my profile that i play (alto) saxophone. now that's not entirely false but i never really liked the saxophone, my my mum forced me to play it in grade 5, when i wanted to play the french horn. and when i tried out for highschool and got the oboe, it became my main instrument.
I started having group voice lessons at the beginning of last year. i come from a family where every sings, but people say that i'm second only to my 20 year old sister(i'm one of 6. shes the second child, i'm the 5th). i dont really think so. my brother teaches piano and voice privately and whenever he corrected me while i was practising "Defying Gravity", from the musical "Wicked", for a performance(on piano and vocal) he only ever corrected the piano. this annyed me as a pianist but as a singer i wondered why. my friend wants to learn it but she isnt as vocally developed as me so i said i would teach her the song and be her accompanist. I am gonna need a few pointers on being a teacher.
My music experience has mostly been just performance but now that i'm in my second year of highschool, i am trying to compose more now. but i dont know what to compose. i want to write songs for my band (once i get it started) but i've never had much experience. i've havent done theory exams either, but i hope to start them by next year.
There are a lot of instruments i want to try. by the time i graduate highschool, i want be able to play the guitar(acoustics, electric and bass) very well. and i want to have tried a very long list of instruments: flute, clarinet, trumpet, french horn, bassoon, contrabassoon, cor anglais(english horn), oboe d'amour, violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp and the drumkit. I may pick up saxophone again one day when teachers arent breathing down ur neck and u dont have to practise every day, just when u wanna.
My career is going to be totally music based. after highschool, i am going to try out for the Queensland Consevatorium of Music(best music uni in my district), majoring in performance on oboe or piano... or voice. And if i dont get into that then i'm going to study teaching, and either teach music at high schools or become an instrumental teacher/ conductor.
