This is a common progression which is found in plenty of other pop songs, including for example, The Rolling Stone's Sympathy for the Devil. In fact both songs have a very similar melodic contour which
emphasises the C over the G chord and the C natural over the D chord. This is a bluesy melody and chord progression - it's in the key of D, but includes the chord C which is a 'flat 7' chord, commonly found in the blues.
