The opening theme of Robbie William's 'Millenium' is taken
from the James Bond theme "You Only Live Twice". Apparently though, there will be no Bond role for Robbie himself.
What gives the melody its haunting appeal is largely the supporting harmony. In the key of C major, the dominant, or 5th degree of
the scale would normally be a major chord - G major. Using the chord in the minor key is the trick here.

All the great John Barry needed to do to turn that into his Bond theme was to add a bit of ornamentation.

Notice how similar this is to Barry's other well known melody, the tune for 'Midnight Cowboy'. That tune replaces the G minor
with a Bb major chord, to similar effect (there's only one note difference between the two chords), and uses a similar four note pattern above.
