He was best known for his second piano concerto and his piano suites Woodland Sketches, Sea Pieces, and New England Idylls. Woodland Sketches includes his most popular short piece, To a Wild Rose.

Written by Edward MacDowell in 1883 the 'Hexentanz' (Witches Dance) formed part of the '2 Fantasiestücke for Piano'. It's a very difficult piece, often used to showcase a pianist's skills. It seems to depict a tremendous whirling and swirling.
