About 'Gnossienne No.1'
Artist:
Born:
1866
, Honfleur
Died:
1925
, Paris
The Artist:
Eccentric French composer who influenced the Parisian composers of the early 20th century, including Debussy and Stravinsky. His ballet Parade was performed by Diaghilev and displayed a jazz influence. He is known for his comic and bizarre titles, such as 'Three Pear-shaped pieces'.
Composed:
c.1890
Info:
Satie composed several gnossiennes inventing a new type of musical composition.
There are different theories as to the meaning of the word, some relate it to the apparent involvement of Satie's with gnostic movements, others link it to the Theseus, Ariadne and Minotaur myth.
Several of the Gnossiennes were used for film soundtrack since the 1960's, this particular one - the first - proving to be a rather popular choice, featured in the Poirot episode "Five little pigs", "The painted veil" and "Chocolat" to mention just a few.
