This theme opens Elgar's first symphony, which was a huge success on its premiere in 1908. Elgar wrote, "the opening theme is intended to be simple and, in intention, noble & elevating ... the sort of ideal call - in the sense of persuasion, not coercion or command - and something above every day & sordid things. The theme returns in a grandioso statement at the very end of the symphony.
