I happen to agree with dave... though I might have phrased it in politer terms. It would be disappointing if this post turned into an argument between him and gnote.
PS: Who is gnote by the way? I`ve never seen him post here before...

I`ve really seen some ridiculous replies here.
First of all, the teacher is often worth that money. U don`t need to be first chair of the National Orchestra to be worth that money. The first chair thing that I mentioned was just to let u know the miserable pay that u get playing in an orchestra.
2nd... It`s the parents`s responsibility to scout for a good teacher. If u think that the teacher is not suitable for your child though she may be 40 per half hour or higher, then what`s the point of pursuing under her tutelage? But often professionals are that price cause thay are experienced enough to bring out the best in different children with different strengths and weaknesses. They know enough to achieve that.
3rd... If you`re not into serious learning in the first place, of caz , by all means, please don`t even engage a teacher who`s damn serious into teaching, if not you`re just wasting his or her time. It`s NOT that a good teacher is only available for a good enough student or the other way round. But u know, if you are going to take up 4 hours of my timetable every week, without the slighest intention to improvr yourself or be the best u can, then I rather u not come for my lesson at all, I rather not earn your money.
To me, the sense of achievement is more important than the cash.
BUT, I will not teach for free, nor reduce fees. CXause, that`s my expertise. It`s self respect. And no, for your information, A music major need not depend on his students`s fees for survival.
There are other things that u can do. And much often, it`s the other way round. It`s always the students scouting for good teachers, not teachers going student hunting. Wonder why?
4th... An earnest, serious student who loves music that much will not be satisfied just by intending to learn for fun. They are always in constant pursue of a higher level, be it technically or understanding wise. And they too understand that only those who are really profesisonals and happen to charge more can give them what they want. That`s why people travel across state to state, 3 hours to and, paid a hell lot of $ and time to learn from decent teachers.
5th... If they respect the teacher just as much as they respect their path of learning, then they will NEVER doubt and attempt to ask the teacher for a fees deduction. They, will in fact really, try to pay `by hook or by crook`.
6th And no, I don`t recommend people steal to pay for fees. And I believe I didn`t mention that at all.
But more often, the students will work or save up to pay. The idea of changing to a more cost-friendly teacher will not even cross their minds, and so do the parents if the teacher delivers.
And to whoever who posted that teachers are not worth that fee, caz not all teachers are first chair. Well, I think that is pathetic. Do u know how many decent string players or pianists there are out there?
It may seem that I am offensive. I am sorry if I am too harsh, but seeing all these replies about fees not matching to a teacher`s status or realiability is maddening.
Thank you.

hey I finally found a good teacher that`s really reasonable about $20 per 1/2 hr lesson. now I know that`s still $40 per hour but what makes it reasonable is that I don`t have to pay for a whole years worth of lessons at a time so I can go every other week instead. yaay! besides, I`m a beginner and there`s no rush to become the world best violist haha. :p

I am a former student of the Senior Lecturer in clarinet at my uni. He is a good enough teacher to be able to charge whatever he wants.
To illustrate: I have been having some issues in my playing, so I went to him for help. Yesterday, we had a 15 minute lesson. This morning, I saw improvements in my playing that would normally take weeks to happen.
And I got the lesson for free.
