Cadence - Musical Definition

Cadence - A melodic or harmonic pattern that provides musical punctuation at the end of a musical phrase. The most common cadence is the 'perfect' cadence - in C major, this would mean chords moving from G major (the chord on the fifth) to C major (the tonic).
