In this lesson we will learn to read three open strings on your guitar using standard notation.
Study this picture for a bit:
These are the first three strings on your guitar in the order of 3rd, 2nd & 1st.
Notice how the note "G" is on the second line from the bottom, the same line the treble clef, or "G" clef is curled around. Counting up from the "G" we come to the space for "A" (more about that note later) then the next line is "B". Notice how the lines and spaces are like a ladder going up. If we do the same from the "B" then we have the space "C", the line "D", and the next space is "E". your guitars first string!
Now that we are familiar with the look of the notes on the staff, let's practice reading them! Here's a short piece using the first three strings:
Once you are familiar with the sound of this example, pick up your guitar and play along. Try to keep your eyes on the music instead of looking at your hand. Your right hand has to learn to feel where the different strings are because you can't always be looking at them while you play.
We are now ready to start working with our left hand!
